Serving with Pioneers in the Trieste area in Italy in partnership with the local church.
At first glance Italy may seem rich in faith, because it’s filled with cathedrals and religious figures. However, there are about 60 million people in Italy and more than 99% of them lack the understanding of what it means to know Christ as Saviour and Lord.
We are excited to be in Italy helping people discover God, His love for them and His mission for His church.
To see a multiplying network of Gospel centered community groups permeating the city of Trieste and its surrounding areas who are connected through different church gatherings.
In September 2020 we began planting another church in the rural area outside of Trieste called Opicina.
Through prayer and reliance on the Holy Spirit we will use the opportunities God gives us in our relationships to share our faith in Christ (the Gospel of Grace vs Works) and be examples to those around us. We will be training groups and facilitating discovery Bible studies to help those who are eager to know more about God on their journey to salvation! We pray that through this ministry people will discover their desperate need to be reconciled to God, understand the depth of His love, come to know Him intimately, and mature into reproducing, God-glorifying disciples.
We hope to see God growing our existing christian community, where people can experience fellowship with believers, discover who God is, be inspired to pursue an intimate relationship with Him, and share their faith with others.
As a Church we do not want to just run programs to reach people, but be the light that we are called to be as we as the Church live out the Gospel in our everyday, ordinary lives in the context of biblical community. Living out the Gospel in our lives as a community of believers will naturally result in building relationships, sharing the Gospel and introducing people to our community. We desire that our strategy be less strategic and more natural, bringing Jesus into ordinary life.
Jesus came into the world to save men and women from their sins through His life, death and resurrection. To be a community of the Gospel, is to have the good news (Jesus) that changes lives as the center of everything we do.
Being a community means that we consider our mission of transformation, evangelization and discipleship as a community project; we do this together.
Being a local church means that we are committed to serve in and around Trieste. We believe that the Gospel creates a community who lives locally and serves the neighbourhood.
From top of the “boot” in the Alps to the islands of Sardinia and Sicily, off its “toe”, Italy is acclaimed for its wonderful cuisine, priceless art treasures and beautiful landscapes. From the world’s view, Italy is still thriving. Its democratic republic is working in spite of many governmental changes in recent years.
Looking at Italy spiritually, however, it is not the Christian nation it is sometimes thought to be. About 95% of the people consider themselves Catholic, but in fact only 5% of them are practicing Catholics. Evangelical believers number less than 0.8%. Much of Italy is untouched by the Gospel.
In contrast, the darkness of the Occult, New Age activities, cults and Satanism are strong forces in Italy today. Yet despite this very difficult spiritual climate, there is hope. The training and development of national leaders has been promising. Italians are searching. Italy is ripe for the change only Christ can bring.
• Pray for nominal Christians throughout Italy, that they would gain a true understanding of the gospel.
• Pray for Italians enslaved by tradition or disillusioned with church structures to encounter the living Christ.
• Pray for the power of God to be revealed and to set free those lost in the darkness of occult, pagan, and New Age practices.
Consider the following:
Less than 1% of Italy’s 60 million inhabitants even profess to have embraced the gospel of grace
Bible-based churches are few and often struggle to be relevant and reach out
Strategic, intentional church-planting is rare and much of the prevalent theology is weak.
Evangelicals are less than 1% of the population
80% of cities, towns and villages have no evangelical church
In some areas there are 40,000 unreached people for every 1 evangelical church
150,000 practising fortune-tellers, 3 times the number of priests!
Nominalism and secularisation are rapidly increasing
More than 20 Italian cities with around 50,000 people have NO known Evangelical church.
30 million Italians live in towns of less than 20,000 people of which the vast majority have no church.
The student population of Rome is around 230,000 and that of Milan about 180,000. Gospel work among the students is still very small or completely absent.
Islam is Italy’s second religion. In some locations in Italy up to a third of the population are migrants. And almost completely unreached.
Up to 9 million ‘users’ monthly access prostitution, and human trafficking is a growing scourge.
But consider the following too:
Growing, healthy unrest is developing among many Christians who long for depth and growth and have missional vision;
Substantial opportunities and challenges exist for Gospel-proclamation: universities, migrant communities, the disillusioned religious, frustrated and confused young people... just some of the areas of need;
